Not defending the Tory guy but while I know the question asker means Democratic Republic of thee Congo but tbf I understand the confusion as he could have meant the Republic of the Congo (though it doesn’t border Rwanda - BUT the ROC actually is dominant Kongo People ethnicity unlike DRC - it’s complicated…). Also the Rwandan genocide was in 1994? The only remnants is some Hutu nationalist and Tutsi counter-Hutu paramilitaries… The question asker doesn’t know anything about his supposed own country. The DRC ceased to exist in 1971 and would reappear (like many countries in history i.e. Ireland regaining independence multiple times after being invaded again and again, or Belgium after WW1 and 2) in 1997. At the time of the Rwandan genocide it was Zaire that was in its place. Zaire was a very different country like Rhodesia to Zimbabwe… it was aimed to create a pan-national new ethic identity that rejected Kongo people origins and Congo river references, implemented under a fascist system and ideology called Mobutism after its leader. Zaire did ply a role in the genocide and following conflict between Hutu Nationalists Vs Tutsi, moderate Hutu and Twa but again it hasn’t existed since 1997! The DRC is a very complicated nation, Congo by the fact the river is their and in name only. The Kongo People account for only 7% of the DRC for example and that’s the second biggest group. The chances this guy is a Hutu/Tutsi/Twa (the groups involved in the conflicts with the later 2 being victims of the original genocide) is very slim considering again the effects of Mobutism live on in the fact that these groups former dominates have been reduced (and tragically cleansed). Also groups are ethnic - they are identified by physical differences and characteristics like say someone from the UK would be different to a Slav from the Czech Republic. Saying your from the DRC would mean nothing in Rwanda they would only based it on ethnicity not nationality. Basically whilst the 2 muppet politicians know next to nothing, the guy asking the question is just as clueless when he shouldn’t be. Oh also Rwanda has not been at war with the DRC since 2003 and during the Rwandan genocide again the DRC and DR Congolese/ Democrat Republican Congolese Identity didn’t exist. (And to this day it’s just a nationality not ethnicity).
